SIEU FAQ

SIEU is one of the many trade unions in Singapore representing the interests of workers. However, SIEU is considered an industry union and we represent workers in unionised insurance companies. We were founded in the year 1955. SIEU is also affiliated to the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and the UNI Global Union; a global union representing more than 900 trade unions and 20 million members to date.

SIEU is one out of the other 57 affiliated unions of the NTUC. Therefore, our members enjoy the full suite of benefits NTUC offers. Beyond that, SIEU has its own array of benefits ranging from gifts for new-born, getting-well, and newly wed to golfing and country club discounts. But joining SIEU is not just about the perks, it’s mainly about the protection, advice and representation at your workplace.

SIEU is allowed by law to represent certain executive and managerial staff on a limited, individual basis. These areas are in salary arrears, breach of contract, retrenchments, wrongful dismissal and re-employment disputes. Since 1 April 2015, SIEU is allowed by law to collectively represent executive employees for collective bargaining.

Sure! We have established a U Live community within SIEU and it is tied to the same community in NTUC. They look into the social and health needs of our matured members. Basically, the Labour Movement wants to be there for you at each stage of your life.

As we have explored earlier, joining the union isn’t just about the perks. It’s mainly for the protection, representation and progress of our members in their lives and careers. We are in the business of building lives!

We are happy companies give good benefits and treat their workers fairly.  But no one can guarantee things do not change. Just as in the business of Insurance, there are always risks of uncertainty. SIEU provides that protection if unfortunately, things happen.  Moreover, many employment benefits that companies offer today are because of SIEU’s influence in setting the benchmark for the industry through the years. On the other hand, we are confident our comprehensive range of benefits is worth the while.

A Collective Agreement or CA in short is a document signed between the union and company sealing the agreement on a range of employment terms and conditions from salary increments to medical benefits. The document is then sent to the Industrial Arbitration Court (IAC) to be certified and gazetted. This process is done once every 3 years.

If your company is unionised, please seek your Branch Chairman’s assistance. If not, you may contact SIEU at 6337 0273 or email sieu@ntuc.org.sg for further advice.

If your company is unionised, you may see the Branch Chairman. You may also call or email us if you need further clarifications.

Please update SIEU directly if you’ve changed your home address or phone number. By keeping our records up to date also helps us to contact you when needed. It also helps NTUC to contact you on your benefits.

A union member is anyone who has joined a registered trade union or NTUC as a member.

For SIEU and other NTUC affiliated unions, membership is differentiated into two types. Ordinary Branch (OB) Members enjoy the full range of benefits from NTUC and SIEU. They are also fully represented at their workplaces and are entitled to stand for elections as union leaders. OB members have more benefits and representation in SIEU. General Branch (GB) Members on the other hand, are more social in nature. They enjoy various NTUC benefits and SIEU’s country club/golfing discounts. Usually, we depend on the individual’s employment status to decide if someone should be OB or GB.

If you work within the insurance industry, you should be a SIEU member. As we are affiliated to the Congress, our members are also part of the NTUC. So joining SIEU also means you are part of the NTUC. However, SIEU offers certain benefits beyond those from NTUC.

This is easy! Anyone can be active; either OB or GB members. We have about 10 sub-committees that members can choose to serve in. They range from youth, women, welfare, sports, to publicity. You may approach your Branch Chairman or contact SIEU directly.

Basically, our branch leaders (Branch Chairmen and Delegates) represent members at the workplaces while the Executive Council presides over the union’s daily operational matters. The roles of our Branch Chairmen, Delegates and the Executive Council can be found in our Constitution. Every member should have a copy of our Constitution. Please ask your branch leaders or SIEU for a copy of it.

We understand the world we live and work in today has changed. Many of us struggle for time to balance between our commitments in the family and at work. At the end of the day, we try to improve our lives, or at least maintain it. This is where the labour movement and SIEU can help! With our various connections and resources, we rely on our members and leaders to decide how we can improve our environment; be it at work or the society. Even with the little time we have, together, we can help realise the labour movement’s call for Better Jobs, Better Lives! Do approach your Branch Chairman or SIEU directly for assistance.
